Protected Area Checklists

Checklist of five protected areas of Ecuador have been incorporated in the Protected Area field on the Ecuadorian Checklist. These subsets of the flora represent areas of increased collecting and surveys. Additional taxa will be added to the lists from future collecting trips and as existing voucher specimens are identified.

1. Checklist of the Flora of Bilsa Biological Station, Ecuador

This checklist includes specimen records from the TROPICOS database, of vascular plants collected in the Bilsa Biological Reserve. The reserve covers about 3,000 hectares (7,410 acres) and is one of the last remaining examples of tropical wet forest in western Ecuador.

2. Checklist of the Flora of the Cordillera del Cóndor Region, Ecuador and Peru

This checklist includes specimen records from the TROPICOS database, of vascular plants collected in the Cordillera del Cóndor region of southeastern Ecuador (part of Morona-Santiago and Zamora-Chinchipe provinces) and northern Peru (part of Amazonas and Cajamarca departments). This database includes 18,975 plant collections from the Cordillera del Cóndor region in both countries, from 1990 to 2007.

The botanical inventory program in the Cordillera del Cóndor during 2004-2007 is a collaborative project of the Missouri Botanical Garden (MO), the Herbario Nacional del Ecuador (QCNE), the herbarium of the Universidad Nacional de Loja, Ecuador (LOJA) and the Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, Peru (HUT).  This program has been supported by grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the National Geographic Society, the Tayor Fund for Ecological Research, and Conservation International.

3. Checklist of the Flora of the Páramo of Cajas, Ecuador

This checklist includes specimen records from the TROPICOS database -including records imported from the AAU database- of vascular plants collected in the Cajas National Park. The Park is located in the Azuay province, 35 km west of the city of Cuenca, between 3000 and 4450 m, and comprises ca. 29,000 ha of the high elevation paramo ecosystem.

 

4. Checklist of the Flora of Jatun Sacha, Ecuador

This checklist includes specimen records from the TROPICOS database, of vascular plants collected in the Jatun Sacha Biological Reserve. The reserve was established in 1986 and is located about 15 km east of Tena, Ecuador in the province of Napo. The reserve protects about 2,000 hectares (4,940 acres) of tropical wet forest.

5. Checklist of the Flora of Yasuní National Park, Ecuador

This checklist includes specimen records from the TROPICOS database, of vascular plants collected in the Yasuní National Park. Yasuní is the largest national park in Ecuador covering more than 900,000 hectares (2.2 million acres). The park is located in the Orellana and Pastaza provinces of eastern Ecuador.
