Taxonomy and Floristics of the Neotropical Bignoniaceae

Lúcia G. Lomann & Charlotte M. Taylor

The Bignoniaceae specimens and other materials compiled by Alwyn Gentry comprise one of the significant specialist collections at MO. This Bignoniaceae Project presents some taxonomic information for this family together with other information in the TROPICOS database. This information mainly covers the Neotropical Bignoniaceae, with a major focus on the Bignonieae Tribe, which includes most of the lianas.

Alwyn H. Gentry (1945-1993) studied the Bignoniaceae, and in particular the Neotropical species, extensively in the field and the MO herbarium for several decades. He compiled the resources to present a monograph of the Neotropical species, and published part of this work before his untimely death. After his death some of his works-in-progress were finished by collaborators, and his data were organized and edited. These data are available at http://www.mobot.org/mobot/research/gentry/welcome.shtml.

Lúcia G. Lohmann subsequently studied the systematics and taxonomy of the Neotropical tribe Bignonieae, which includes most of the tropical liana species. She presented the first detailed molecular and morphological study of this group, which supported extensive changes in generic circumscriptions. This project provides an interactive guide to this new classification.

Note: For each scientific name listed on these Project pages, clicking on the name will lead to the Bignoniaceae Project data page; to then see the standard TROPICOS Name page data directly from the project page, go to the upper right of the screen to the menu "Choose Project", and click on "TROPICOS".

This web site is under ongoing construction.

We sincerely thank the William F. Froelich Foundation for financial support for data compilation, and Ms. Suzanne Hirth and Mr. Alan Rowlson for significant help with curation of the specimens and data for this project.
