Plants rather slender, rigid, often in dull, brown mats. Stems creeping, loosely pinnately or irregularly branched, with slender, suberect, more or less subjulaceous branches. Leaves erect-appressed when dry, erect-spreading when moist, lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, often keeled, narrowly acute at the apex, somewhat excavate at the base; margins entire, plane or slightly revolute on one side at the base; costae single, strong, subpercurrent; leaf cells rounded-quadrate to shortly oval, nearly uniform throughout, slightly elongate near the insertion, thick-walled, smooth, bulging or mammillose. Autoicous. Setae more or less elongate; capsules erect, symmetric, exserted, oblong-ovoid or shortly cylindrical, somewhat constricted at the mouth; opercula conic-rostrate; annuli weakly differentiated; peristome double, but exostome teeth usually highly reduced, single or absent. Calyptrae mitrate, plicate, naked or hairy. Spores spherical, large, densely papillose.
