Austinia Müll. Hal., Linnaea 39: 439. 1875.
A monotypic genus, Austinia is distinguished by the short acuminate, ovate, short-lanceolate leaves with a slightly decurrent base, serrulate-dentate margins above base, short, single costa, smooth, short seta, erect capsules, and single peristome represented by smooth to weakly papillose segments. A detail discussion and revision of Austinia has been provided by Buck and Crum (1978). The genus is named for the United States bryologist, Coe Finch Austin (1831-1880).
