Description Annual, the culms tufted, very slender, 2-30 cm. long; leaves 1 mm. wide; bracts longer than the inflorescence; spikelets 5-20 mm. long, 2-3 mm. wide, yellowish, digitate or short-spicate; scales obtuse, closely appressed, 2 mm. long; stamens 3 or 2, the filaments persistent on the rachis; achene lenticular, obovate, 1 mm. long, black with undulate whitened incrustations at maturity.
Distribution In wet fields. Tropical and temperate regions of both hemispheres. Type from Europe.
