Usually deciduous trees. Scaly buds, often resinous. Flowers showy, bracteate. Calyx tubular or campanulate, deciduous. Petals 4-5, clawed. Stamens usually 7. Capsule more or less leathery, the valves coriaceous. Seeds 1-3, with a coriaceous and glaucous testa, hilum prominent.
