Strobilanthes, as currently defined (Carine & Scotland, 2002; Wood et al., 2003; Moylan et al., 2004), is the second largest genus of the family with c. 250 species (Carine & Scotland, 2002) and distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia. The Malagasy spp belong to the genus Acanthopale as suggested by Yunfei Deng (Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou, pers. comm. to PBP, Aug 2009). A manuscript is in press to formally transfer the remaining species from Madagascar.
