About 8 species, mainly E. Mediterranean.


Another species of this genus, B. hirsutus (Labill.) Barkoudah, grows in rock crevices up the Hermon Mt., where it is very rare, and in southern Sinai Highlands.

Perennial hairy herbs. Leaves opposite, small, exstipulate. Bracts leaf-like. Pedicels as long as or shorter than calyx. Flowers small, hermaphrodite. Calyx tubular, penta-gonous, with 5-ribbed tube membranous between ribs and with 5 small teeth. Petals cuneate, with spreading limb and long, finely winged claw constricted at top. Stamens 10. Ovary 1-celled, many-ovuled; styles 2, stigmatose all along the inner surface. Cap-sule oblong-ovoid or cylindrical to urceolate, dehiscent by 4 teeth. Seeds comma-shaped.
