Notes: The genus was until recently treated as a synonym of Plectranthus, but has now been resurrected, and both genera are represented in Madagascar. The genus Pycnostachys, until recently regarded as distinct, has now been placed in synonymy under Coleus. (see Paton et al., 2019 for further information.)

Coleus can generally be recognised by its corolla with upper lip shorter than lower lip, and with the pedicel attached asymmetrically to the base of the calyx tube, opposite the posterior lip, rather than the corolla lobes more or less equal in length, and the pedicel attached symmetrically to the base of the calyx tube in Plectranthus.
