Notes:
Here we take a broad view of this genus. This is contrary to the results of recent phylogenetic studies, that suggest splitting the genus into 5 segregates. This alternative view would result in the need to transfer most of the Malagasy species to other genera, for which nomenclatural combinations do not currently exist. The situation is greatly confused by the unfortunate decision ratified at the 2005 International Botanical Congress in Vienna to change the type of the genus.
