Ecology: Páramo, on soil, in part associated with Acaena cylindrostachya, Arcythophyllum nitidum, Calamagrostis effusa and Espeletia pleiochasia. Elevation: 3300-4400 m. Distribution: Endemic to the tropical Andes.
Campylopus cleefii is characterized by plants verticillate foliate, subtubulose leaves 4-5 mm long, costa smooth on back, in cross-section with ventral and dorsal stereid bands, alar cells not protruding into costa, thin (hyaline) to thick (reddish) walled, laminal cells thick-walled, upper cells short rectangular to rhomboidal and oblique (or not), basal cells rectangular and weakly pitted, along margin long linear.
