Notes:

Ecology: High open montane to more commonly páramo; on exposed soil, rocky soil, and rocks. Elevation: 2675-4900 m (Venezuela: 3340-4100 m, Colombia: 2700-4285 m, Ecuador: 3450-4600 m, Peru: 2675-4300 m, Bolivia: 2930-4900 m). Distribution: High elevations in the Neotropics, southern Africa, India, northern Asia including Japan.

Aongstroemia julacea is recognized by the small, slender plants, stems julaceous with leaves strongly appress, less than 1 mm long, ovate and broadly rounded with erose-dentate margins, thick costa ending well below the apex, and lamina cells distinctly differentiated above (narrowly oblong and thick-walled) and below (quadrate-rounded, walls not conspicuously thick-walled). The specific epithet refers to the julaceous form of the leafy stems. Contained among the notes of Thériot at PC are several illustrations and a few plants attached to the backside of a postage stamp, presumably the only fragments of the type collection of A. maculate; these are identical to A. julacea (Churchill, 1994a; see general references).

Specimens: VENEZUELA. Mérida: Griffin & López F. PV-13 (MO). COLOMBIA. Cauca: Churchill & Rengifo M. 17268 (HUA, MO, NY); Nariño: Ramírez P. & Weigend 6880 (MO, NY, PSO). PERU. Apurimac: P. & E. Hegewald 8931 (MO); Puno: P. & E. Hegewald 5528 (MO). BOLIVIA. La Paz: Araujo M. 73(JE, LPB, MO, USZ, VEN); Potosí: Churchill et al. 24702 (HSB, LPB, MO, USZ).
