Notes:
Ecology: Lowland savannas or open forested sites, usually in dry or semidry localities; exposed sites, on soil and sandy soil. Elevation: 250-2300 m (Venezuela: 1020-2300 m, Colombia: 250-500 m, Bolivia: 400-630 m). Distribution: Rather widespread in the Neotropics, also in the Paleotropics. Campylopus sprucei Mitt. is a synonym.

Plants large, to 6 cm or more tall, tomentose, rhizoids dark red; leaves evenly foliate, lanceolate, 5-6 mm long; margins sharply toothed in the upper 1/4, also strongly toothed at back along costa, costa strong, at base ca. 2/3 leaf width, excurrent, hyaline or concolorous at tip, in cross-section with stereids above and below guide cells, back ridged, 1-cell high; laminal cells thick-walled, walls entire (not porose), median and upper cells oblong-oval, 15-32 µm long, basal cells quadrate to short rectangular, 10-20 µm long (or diameter), mostly yellowish red to red, alar cells strongly differentiated, excavate, dark red, oblong-short rectangular, larger to 30 µm long, 15 µm wide.
