Ecology: Lowland savannas or open forested sites, usually in dry or semidry localities; exposed sites, on soil and sandy soil. Elevation: 250-2300 m (Venezuela: 1020-2300 m, Colombia: 250-500 m, Bolivia: 400-630 m). Distribution: Rather widespread in the Neotropics, also in the Paleotropics. Campylopus sprucei Mitt. is a synonym.
Ecología: Sabanas de tierras bajas o sitios arbolados abiertos; en lugares expuestos, sobre suelo y suelo arenoso. Elevación: 250-2300 m (Venezuela: 1020-2300 m, Colombia: 250-500 m, Bolivia: 400-630 m). Distribución: Pantropical, en el Neotrópico en México, Centroamérica, Antillas Menores, Guyanas hasta el sudeste de Brasil, Venezuela, y Colombia.

Plants large, most forming dense tufts. Stems to 6 cm or more, tomentose, rhizoids dark red. Leaves evenly foliate, lanceolate, 5-6 mm long; margins sharply toothed in the upper 1/4, costa strong, at base ca. 2/3 leaf width, excurrent, tip hyaline or concolorous, dorsally ridged (1-cell high) and strongly toothed, in cross-section with stereids above and below guide cells; laminal cells thick-walled, walls entire, not porose, median and upper cells oblong-oval, 15-32 µm long, basal cells quadrate to short rectangular, 10-20 µm long (or diameter), mostly yellowish red to red, alar cells strongly differentiated, excavate, dark red, oblong-short rectangular, larger to 30 µm long, 15 µm wide. Sporophytes not observed.
Plantas grandes, la mayoría forma manojos densos. Tallos hasta 6 cm o más altos, tomentosos, con rizoides rojososcuros. Hojas distribuidas uniformemente, lanceoladas, 5-6 mm de largo; márgenes marcadamente dentados en 1/4superior, costa fuerte, ocupando ca. 2/3 de la base de la hoja, excurrente, con extremos hialinos o concoloros, dorsalmente estriada (1-cell alta) y marcadamente dentada, en corte transversal con estereidas encima y debajo de las células guía; células de la lámina con paredes gruesas y enteras, no porosas, células mediales y superiores oblongo-ovales, 15-32 µm de largo, células basales cuadradas a corto rectangulares, 10-20 µm de largo (o diámetro), generalmente rojas amarillentas a rojas, células alares marcadamente diferenciadas, excavadas, rojasoscuras, oblongas cortas rectangulares, mayores a 30 µm de largo, 15 µm de ancho. Esporofitos no observados.
