Ecology: Open upper montane and páramo; on soil and rocks. Elevation: 1900-4550 m (Venezuela: 2800-3200 m, Colombia: 3500-3850 m, Ecuador: 3690-3750 m, Peru: 1900-3200 m, Bolivia: 4550 m). Distribution: Endemic to the tropical Andes.
Campylopus incertus is distinguished by the rather large plants to 5 cm, leaves equally foliate, to 6 mm, excurrent costa, ca. 1/2 at leaf base, ventral hyalocysts (quadrate in cross-section), dorsal stereids, upper lamina cells narrowly oblong-rectangular, rectangular and thick-walled basal cells, distinct alar cells protruding into the costal regionl, and microphyllous branches often present in the axil of distal leaves.
