Ecology: Open high montane to páramo and puna; on humic soil and rocks. Elevation: 3000-4850 m (Venezuela: 3390-3650 m, Colombia: 3000-3800 m, Ecuador: 3100-4100 m, Peru: 3600-4550 m, Bolivia: 3650-4850 m). Distribution: Endemic to the tropical Andes.
Campylopus argyrocaulon is a large species, to 10 cm, with leaves equally foliate, to ca. 8 mm long, costa long excurrent, in cross-section ventral hyalocysts somewhat large and thick-walled, alar cells forming a distinct area, cells lax, basal cells rectangular and thin-walled, more elongate and thinner at the margin, forming a border, upper cells oval to oblong-oval. Campylopus leucognodes (Müll. Hal.) Paris is a synonym.
