Ecology: Open upper montane to páramo and puna; on soil and soil covered rocks, less common on base of trees. Elevation: 2600-4720 m (Venezuela: 3380-3800 m, Colombia: 2900-4285 m, Ecuador: 3900 m, Peru: 3000-4500 m, Bolivia: 2600-4720 m). Distribution: Endemic to the tropical Andes.
Campylopus areodictyon is characterized by presence of microphyllous branches in the axil of upper stem leaves, narrowly lanceolate leaves to 6 mm long, costa contracted at base, in cross-section hyalocysts large, absence of alar cells, basal cells thin-walled, narrowed at the margin forming a distinct border, laminal cells at shoulder thick-walled, ± quadrate. Synonyms include Campylopus breweri E.B. Bartram and C. subconcolor (Hampe) Mitt.
