Ecology: Probably open montane; on wet or moist soil, possibly in disturbed habitats. Elevation: 1000-3000 m (Venezuela: ? m, Peru: 1000-2450 m). Distribution: Rather widespread in temperate and subtropical regions.

Bryum subapiculatum has stems to 10 mm long, rhizoid red gemmae, leaves crowded above, oblong-lanceolate (to 2 mm long), apex acuminate, margins reflexed below, serrulate above, entire below, not bordered, costa strong, often red in color, short to long excurrent, basal cells short rectangular, seta to 40 mm long, capsules pendent, peristome well developed. Synonyms include Bryum chrysoblatum Müll. Hal., B. micro-pendulum Müll. Hal., B. valensiae Müll. Hal.
