Brachythecium stereopoma is characterized by the smooth to weakly plicate, ovate-lanceolate leaves to ca. 2.2 mm with gradual acuminate apex, short to somewhat long decurrancies, slightly lax, quadrate to short rectangular alar cells, dioicous sexual condition, and smooth seta to ca. 22 mm. This species is very common in the Tucuman-Bolivian forest of Bolivia, represented by a distinctive monomorphic form. In the northern montane this species is less frequent, but gametophytically more variable. Synonyms include Brachythecium alboflavens Cardot, B. eupopuleum (Müll. Hal.) Kindb., B. longisetum Herzog, B. mollirameum Müll. Hal., B. mollirameum var. delicatulum Herzog, and B. subjulaceum Herzog. Brachythecium ruderale (Brid.) W.R. Buck is considered to be the same taxon, thus an earlier name for B. stereopoma.
