Notes:

Ecology: Open montane to páramo and probably the shrubby humid puna; frequently found along streams, on soil and rocks, less often on logs. Elevation: 2400-4050 m (Venezuela: 2900-3300 m, Colombia: 2400-4050 m, Ecuador: 2400-3630 m, Peru 3000 m, Bolivia 2700-3500 m). Distribution: Mexico, Central America to Chile, widespread in the North Temperate region.
 
Ecología: Sobre suelo y rocas, menos frecuentemente sobre leños, frecuentemente encontrada a lo largo de corrientes, desde ambientes montanos hasta el páramo. Elevación: 2400-4050 m (Venezuela: 2900-3300 m, Colombia: 2400-4050 m, Ecuador: 2400-3630 m, Perú 3000 m, Bolivia 2700-3500 m). Distribución: México, Centroamérica a Chile, ampliamente distribuida en la región templada norte.
 
Brachythecium rutabulum is characterized by the ovate, weakly plicate leaves, short, apiculate acute apex that is often half-twisted, decurrent base, serrate upper margins, linear medium and upper laminal cells, apical cell of apex of similar size as those below, autoicous sexual condition, and seta densely papillose throughout. Synonyms include Brachythecium espinosae Herzog, B. helvolum (Mont.) A. Jaeger, B. hirtipes (Schimp. ex Müll. Hal.) Paris, B. pseudo-rutabulum (Hampe) A. Jaeger, B. riparium Schimp. ex Müll.
