Brachythecium rivularoides is characterized by the straight, deeply concave, ovate leaves, short, acute apex, fusiform upper laminal cells, apical cell of apex smaller than those below, numerous and lax quadrate alar cells that gradually grade into the basal cells. The plants are similar to B. plumosum. The type collection is from Cordoba, Argentina, collected by Lorentz in 1871.
