Notes:
Ecology: Shrubby and open páramo and humid puna; on soil, rarely on trunk of trees (Podocarpus). Elevation: 3400-5000 m (Venezuela: 3600-4100 m, Colombia: 3800-4350 m, Ecuador: 4200 m, Peru: ? m, Bolivia 3400-5000 m). Distribution: Endemic to the tropical Andes (Venezuela to Bolivia).
 
Brachythecium praelongum is characterized by the small plants with stems to 20 mm long, pseudoparaphyllia ovate -apiculate, leaves ovate- to lanceolate-acuminate, to 1.4 mm long, weakly decurrent, plicate at base, alar cells forming a distinct group, autoicous sexual condition, and seta faintly papillose throughout (McFarland 1988). Synonyms include Brachythecium julaceum Schimp. ex Müll. Hal. nom. nud., B. lescuraeoides Broth. in Perkins, B. peruvianum Broth., B. scaberrimum Herzog, B. trachypodioides Schimp. ex Müll. Hal.

An der Waldgrenze des Rio Saujana, ca. 3400 m, Herzog3268 (JE, lectotype). Syntype: Bolivia. in einer hochandinen Form, die sich durch kürzere, zerknitterte Blätter auszeichnet, im Hochtal von Viloco, ca. 4500 m, Herzog 3141.
