Ecology: Open and forested montane to páramo and shrubby humid puna; typically associated with moist or wet habitats, e.g., streams, on rocks, occasionally on soil. Elevation: 1100-3800 m (Venezuela: 2000-3600 m, Colombia: 1150-3400 m, Ecuador: 2200-3350 m, Peru: 2700-3100 m, Bolivia: 1100-3800 m). Distribution: Mexico and West Indies to Argentina and Chile, widespread in the North Temperate region.
Ecología: Montano abierto y arbolado hasta páramo; típicamente asociado a sitios húmedos o mojados e.g., corrientes, sobre suelo, generalmente sobre rocas. Elevación: 1150-3600 m (Venezuela: 2000-3600 m, Colombia: 1150-3400 m, Ecuador: 2200-3350 m, Perú: 2700-3100 m, Bolivia: 1100-3800 m). Distribución: México y las indias Occidentales hasta Argentina y Chile, ampliamente distribuida en la región templada norte.
Brachythecium plumosum is distinguished by the often golden or dark green plants, ± homomallous arranged leaves that are mostly ovate to ovate-lanceolate, short (blunt), apiculate acute apex, short linear to fusiform median laminal cells, and papillose above, smooth below seta. Synonyms include Amblystegium loeskei Herzog, Brachythecium asperulum (Hampe) A. Jaeger, B. bolivioplumosum Müll. Hal., B. chrysocladon (Hampe) A. Jaeger, B. cochleare Müll. Hal., and B. laevifolium (Mitt.) A. Jaeger.
