Notes:

Ecology: Open montane to páramo and humid puna; on soil and trunk of trees. Elevation: 2500-4600 m (Venezuela: 3100-4000 m, Colombia: 2500-4400 m, Ecuador: 3800-4500 m, Peru: 4035 m, Bolivia: 2700-4600 m). Distribution: Mexico to Bolivia.
 
Ecología: Montano abierto hasta páramo; sobre suelo. Elevación: 2500-4600 m (Venezuela: 3100-4000 m, Colombia: 2500-4400 m, Ecuador: 3800-4500 m, Perú: 4035 m, Bolivia: 2700-4600 m). Distribución: México a Bolivia.
 
Brachythecium occidentale is characterized by the leaves weakly plicate at the base, relatively long acuminate and curved stem leaf apices, weakly decurrent leaf base, weakly defined alar cells, autoicous sexual condition, and smooth seta. Synonyms include Brachythecium flaccum Müll. Hal., B. flexiventrosum (Müll. Hal.) A. Jaeger, B. prasophyllum (Hampe) A. Jaeger.
 
Specimens: COLOMBIA. Boyacá: Cuatrecasas 1342-B (US); Cundinamarca: Cleef 6136, 6401 (U), King & Guevara C-632 (COL, US), King & Guevara C-955 (COL, US). ECUADOR. Chimborazo: Spruce 1375 (BM); Pichincha: Bell 111 (FH). BOLIVIA. Cochabamba: Germain 1160 (FI, NY).

Cundinamarca, Bogota, Tequendama, 2500 m., Lindig s.n. (L, lectotype). According to McFarland the Lindig collection also cited in the original protologue, from Chiquinquira at 2700 m was not located.
