Notes:

Ecology: Upper open montane to subpáramo and humid puna; on soil, rocky soil. Elevation: 2200-4500 m (Venezuela: 3650 m, Colombia: 2800-3100 m, Ecuador: 3100-4500 m, Bolivia: 2200-3800 m). Distribution: Mexico to Argentina.
 
Ecología: Montano abierto superior a subpáramo; sobre suelo, suelo rocoso. Elevación: 2200-4500 m (Venezuela: 3650 m, Colombia: 2800-3100 m, Ecuador: 3100-4500 m, Bolivia: 2200-3800 m). Distribución: México a Argentina.
 
Brachythecium conostomum is characterized by the smooth to weakly plicate, broadly ovate leaves that are abruptly long acuminate apex, narrow decurrent leaf base, margins entire below, entire to serrulate above distinctly spurred costa extending to midleaf, dioicous sexual condition, and smooth seta. Synonyms include Hypnum taylori Spruce ex Mitt. nom. illeg. include. spec. prior, Brachythecium fissidentoides Herzog, B. grandirete Müll. Hal., B. grandirete var. robustum Müll. Hal. in Paris.
