Brachythecium cavifolium is characterized by the julaceous and rather stiff leafy stems, broadly concave, smooth, not plicate, ovate-acute or -apiculate to ovate-short acuminate leaves, distinct decurrent leaf base, entire margins, costa ending near the leaf acumen, quadrate to rectangular alar cells extending into the decurrencies.
