Brachythecium austrosalebrosum is characterized by the tufted leafy stems, strongly concave, broadly ovate to ovate-lanceolate leaves, abrupt to gradual short acuminate or cuspidate apex, numerous, quadrate to rectangular alar cells, autoicous sexual condition, and smooth seta. Cirriphyllum laevifolium Herzog is a synonym.
