Ecology: Shrubby subpáramo to páramo, puna and high montane forrest; on soil and humus. Elevation: 3300-4100 m (Colombia: 3300-4100 m, Ecuador: 4000 m, Peru: 3350 m, Bolivia: 3700 m). Distribution: Colombia to Chile and Argentina; Antarctica and associated islands, New Zealand.
Ecología: Subpáramo arbustivo a páramo y puna; sobre suelo y humus. Elevación: 3300-4100 m (Colombia: 3300-4100 m, Ecuador: 4000 m, Perú: 3350 m, Bolivia: 3700 m). Distribución: Colombia a Chile y Argentina; Antártida e islas asociadas, Nueva Zelanda.
Brachythecium austroglareosum is characterized by the julaceous leafy stems and branches, plicate ovate- to triangular-lanceolate leaves, gradual and long acuminate apex, short decurrent leaf base, entire to serrulate at apex, small quadrate alar cells in a distinct group, autoicous sexual condition, and smooth seta. Brachythecium altarense Broth. in Meyer nom. nud. is included here.
