Ecology: Montane forest to shrubby páramo and humid puna; on shrubs, trunk and branches of trees (including Saracha punctata), occasionally found on logs or upright dead trees. Elevation: 1850-4100 m (Colombia: 2310-4050 m, Ecuador: 2320-2800 m, Peru: 1850-3000 m, Bolivia: 3100-4100 m). Distribution: Central America, West Indies, Colombia to Bolivia.

Acidodontium megalocarpum is distinguished by the dense tufted plants to 2.5 cm, often tomentose below, oblong to obovate-oblong leaves to 3 mm long, short acuminate apex, revolute to reflex in lower half of margins, yellowish, elongate, thick-walled, border cells in 2-3 rows, plane, entire to finely crenulate above, ± slender, long excurrent costa, flexuose and dentate, rhomboidal-hexagonal upper cells to 18 µm wide, setae to 3.5(5) cm, erect to horizontal, clavate capsules to 7(10) mm long, conic-rounded operculum. This species, as noted by Ochi (1980), is highly variable in nearly all characters. Includes the name Acidodontium kunthii Schwägr. nom. illeg.
