The Rhachitheciaceae contain seven genera and about 15 species distributed in the Neotropics, Africa and eastern Asia. Six genera and seven species are recognized in the Neotropics. The family is allied to the Orthotrichales. Characteristics of the family include the small habit, leaves oblong-lanceolate to broadly or narrowly spathulate, upper laminal cells mostly subquadrate, seta short, capsules immersed to short exserted, and when present, 16 peristome teeth in 8 pairs, and the urn smooth or strongly 8-ribbed.
Rhachitheciaceae contiene siete géneros y aproximadamente 15 especies distribuidas en el Neotrópico, África y el este de Asia. Seis géneros y siete especies han sido registradas en el Neotrópico. La familia está relacionada al orden Orthotrichales. Las características de esta familia incluyen hábito reducido, hojas oblongo-lanceoladas hasta ampliamente o angostamente espatuladas, células superiores de la lámina generalmente subcuadradas, seta corta, cápsulas inmersas a corto-excertas, y cuando presente, 16 dientes del peristoma en 8 pares y la urna lisa o marcadamente 8-acostillada.
