The Pterigynandraceae contain six genera and 20 species; primarily of the Northern Hemisphere. In the Neotropics represented by a single species in the genus Trachyphyllum, T. dusenii. The definition and circumscription of the family, a member of the Hypnales, was outlined by Buck and Crum (1990). Heterocladium dimorphum (Brid.) Schimp. and H. plumulosum Herzog have both been recorded from Ecuador, however no collections have been found that can be referred to that genus; Heterocladium is presently listed as doubtful for the tropical Andes.

En el Neotrópico está representada por una sola especie del género Trachyphyllum, T. dusenii. La definición y circunscripción de la familia, miembro del orden Hypnales, fue perfilada por Buck y Crum (1990). Heterocladium dimorphum (Brid.) Schimp. y H. plumulosum Herzog han sido reportadas en Ecuador, sin embargo no han sido encontradas colecciones que puedan referirse a este género; Heterocladium es actualmente considerado dudoso.
