The Meesiaceae contain four genera and about 15 species primarily of the Northern Hemisphere. Only the genus Meesia is recorded in the Neotropics. The family is placed in the Bryales, however recent studies suggest the Splachnales (cf. Goffinet et al. 2008). This latter classification also places Leptobryum in the Meesiaceae, however that genus is retained in the Bryaceae in this treatment.
Las Meesiaceae contienen cuatro géneros y ca. 15 especies principalmente del hemisferio norte. Sólo el género Meesia ha sido registrado en el Neotrópico. La familia está ubicada en el orden Bryales, aunque estudios recientes sugieren su ubicación en Splachnales (cf. Goffinet et al. 2008). Esta última clasificación también incluye a Leptobryum en las Meesiaceae, aunque este género se mantiene en las Bryaceae en este tratamiento.
