Notes:
An aquatic family, the Fontinalaceae contain 3-4 genera and about 30 species, mostly of the north temperate region; only a single species and genus is recorded for the tropical Andes. Buck and Allen (1997) suggest that the Fontinalaceae belongs to the Leucodontales based on branching pattern, rhizoid-associated anatomy and axillary hairs.
