Plants small to medium sized, caespitose, dark brown, reddish, or blackish, rigid and brittle when dry; stems erect, irregularly branched, central strands absent. Leaves lanceolate, ovate or obovate, broadly acute to obtuse, not bordered; costate or ecostate; cells short above, elongate at base, incrassate throughout, variably porose and sinuose, papillose or smooth; alar cells not or weakly differentiated. Cladoautoicous. Sporophytes terminal, elevated on a pseudopodium. Setae absent; capsules shortly exserted, elliptic, dehiscent by 4–8 longitudinal slits. Peristome absent. Calyptrae small, campanulate-mitrate. Spores brown, smooth.
