Aongstroemia contains about 10 species mostly at high elevations, widely distributed; three species in the Neotropics. Aongstroemia filiformis is frequent in open premontane to high montane sties, usually on exposed banks and road cuts, whereas A. julacea is restricted to subpáramo to full páramo sites, on soil, often inconspicuously associated with other tuft-forming bryophytes.
 
Aongstroemia tiene ca. 10 especies, generalmente se encuentra a grandes altitudes, ampliamente distribuido; tres especie en el Neotrópico.

Plants small, slender, forming loose tufts, dark green to yellowish-green or golden-brown. Stems erect, slender, julaceous, few branched; central strand present. Leaves clasping and deeply concave, shortly oblong-obtuse or -truncate, or abruptly subulate from an obovate sheathing base; margins incurved, entire or strongly erosed-dentate distally; costae single, subpercurrent or long excurrent; laminal cells smooth, median cells linear or linear-vermicular, thick-walled; lower or basal cells short to long rectangular. Dioicous. Perigonia appearing lateral on distal stems, inflorescence bud-like. Perichaetia terminal or appearing lateral by innovations, leaves larger and strongly convolute. Setae elongate, smooth. Capsules erect, urn obloid or ovoid-cylindrical; opercula long rostrate, oblique; gymnostomous or peristome present, single, teeth 16, divided1/2-2/3 into 2-4 segments, perforate below, papillose distally. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth and naked. Spores spherical, lightly papillose.
 
Plantas pequeñas, delgadas, formando manojos laxos, de color verde oscuro hasta verde-amarillento o pardo-dorado. Tallos erectos, delgados, juláceos, poco ramificados; con cordón central. Hojas amplectantes y profundamente cóncavas, brevemente obloide-obtusas o -truncadas, o abruptamente subuladas desde una base obovada envainadora; márgenes incurvados, enteros o marcadamente erosionado-dentados distalmente; costa simple, subpercurrente o largo excurrente; células de la lámina lisas, células mediales lineales o lineo-vermiculares, con paredes gruesas; células inferiores o basales corto- a largo-rectangulares. Dioicas. Perigonios aparentemente laterales sobre tallos distales, inflorescencias en forma de yemas. Periquecios terminales o de apariencia lateral por innovaciones, hojas mayores y marcadamente convolutas. Setas alargadas, lisas. Cápsulas erectas, urna obloide u ovoide-cilíndrica; opérculo largo-rostrado, oblicuo; gimnostóma o peristoma presente, simple, con 16 dientes, divididos hasta 1/2-2/3 en 2-4 segmentos, perforados hacia abajo, distalmente papilosos. Caliptra cuculada, lisa y desnuda. Esporas esféricas, finamente papilosas.
