Notes:
The treatment of Pilotrichella by Allen and Magill (2003) adapted and modified the genus which included the transfer of Pilotrichella quitense to Pleurozium. Previously considered a monotypic genus primarily distributed in the Northern Hemisphere (placed in Calliergonella by some authors). The genus may be confused with Calliergonella and Calliergon from which it differs by the absence of a hyalodermis, and the strongly forked costa, thick-walled alar cells; also, these two Amblystegiaceae taxa are common in very wet marshy or boggy sites, whereas Pleurozium is found in slightly drier habitats.
