A genus of four species distributed in the Americas and northern Asia. Three species in the Neotropics: J. arsenei (Thér.) Thér. is endemic to central Mexico, J. williamsii (Deguchi) Delgad. from the cordillera Occidental in Peru, and J. wrightii (Sull. in Gray) Thér. is recorded from Bolivia. Distinguishing features of the genus include the short obovate leaves, long to short hyaline hair point, unistratose or partially bistrastose lamina, upper laminal cells mostly oval to oblong-oval, somewhat lax quadrate basal cells, spiculose, perforate, sometimes segments fused, peristome teeth, and the erose or deeply lobed mitrate-campanulate calyptra.
