Hypopterygium contains seven species of mostly cool temperate Southern Hemisphere and highland tropics; a single species for the Tropical Andes. The frondose habit with fronds broad and spreading, dimorphic bordered leaves, elongate seta, and presence of endostomial cilia are diagnostic.

 

Hypopterygium contiene siete especies generalmente distribuidas en regiones templadas frías del hemisferio sur y tierras altas de los trópicos; sólo una especie está presente en el Neotrópico. Está caracterizado por su hábito frondoso con frondas anchas y patentes, hojas dimorfas bordeadas, seta alargada y la presencia de cilios en el endostoma.
