Fontinalis is distinguished by its aquatic habitat, 3-ranked, ecostate leaves, firm-walled elongate cells, and immersed capsules. Sporophytes are rare, reproduction is likely by fragmentation of leafy stems and branches.
 
Fontinalis se distingue por ocupar hábitats acuáticos, hojas en 3 filas, ecostadas, células alargadas con paredes firmes y cápsulas inmersas. Los esporofitos son raros, la reproducción es por fragmentación de los tallos y ramas foliosas.
