Epipterygium, with about 10 species, is pantropical in distribution, extending into the north temperate region. Three species are recorded for the Neotropics. The genus is readily recognized by the differentiated larger lateral and smaller dorsal leaves. Epipterygium wrightii (Sull.) Lindb., of the Greater Antilles, has been reported from Venezuela as E. orbifolium Müll. Hal. [Linnaea 42: 473, 1879] apparently based on a collection by Fendler s.n.); this species is very similar to E. immarginatum but differs by wider upper laminal cells, greater than 25 µm.
