Anoectangium contains 47 species, primarily tropical, extending into the temperate mountainous regions and the Arctic; about five species recorded in the Neotropics. The genus is distinguished by the sporophytes borne terminally on short lateral branches, often ligulate leaves, costa deeply grooved, absence of a ventral stereid band, and laminal cells usually strongly bulging-pluripapillose. A worldwide revision is needed for this genus. Keys adapted from Zander and Eckel (2007).

Anoectangium contiene 47 especies, principalmente tropicales, extendiéndose en regiones montañosas templado y el Árctico; ca. cinco especies fueron registradas en el Neotrópico. El género se distingue por llevar los esporofitos en ramas laterales cortas, hojas a menudo liguladas, costa profundamente sulcada, ausencia de una banda ventral de estereidas y células de la lámina por lo general marcadamente abultado-pluripapilosas.
