Notes:
Anoectangium contains 47 species, primarily tropical, extending into the temperate mountainous regions and the Arctic; about five species recorded in the Neotropics. The genus is distinguished by the sporophytes borne terminally on short lateral branches, often ligulate to ovate-lanceolate leaves, costa deeply grooved, absence of a ventral stereid band, laminal cells usually strongly bulging-pluripapillose, and absence of a peristome. Treatment adapted from Cano and Jiménez (2013).

Plants small to medium-sized, forming dense tufts or cushions, green to yellowish green distally. Stems mostly 1-2.5 cm, in cross-section outer cells small and thick-walled, central strand present, often tomentose at base. Leaves distant to crowded, contorted to distally-incurved when dry, spreading when wet, ligulate, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, mostly 1-2 mm, rarely constricted above base, keeled, not decurrent; lamina unistratose; apex broadly obtuse to acute, often apiculate; margins plane, papillose-crenulate to weakly denticulate, unistratose, border absent; costa percurrent to shortly excurrent, dorsal surface cells usually linear, smooth or papillose, ventral surface cells distally usually linear, in cross-section semicircular to slightly reniform, guide cells in one layer, ventral stereid band undifferentiated, dorsal stereid band slightly lunulate to semicircular in shape, hydroids absent, dorsal surface cells differentiated, ventral surface cells usually absent; upper and middle laminal cells quadrate-rounded to rectangular or oblate, thin to slightly thick-walled, not collenchymatous, flat to convex on both surfaces in cross-section, with simple or usually bifid papillae over the lumen or scattered, usually obscuring it; basal laminal cells rectangular, rarely quadrate, usually thick-walled, not porose, not collenchymatous, smooth. Asexual reproduction rare, by gemmae. Dioicous. Perichaetia on short lateral branches; perichaetial leaves differentiated, ovate-lanceolate, sheathing at base. Setae 5-12 mm, yellowish brown. Capsules exserted, erect; urn ovoid to cylindical or elliptical. 0.8-1.5 mm; annulus persistent; peristome absent; operculum rostrate. Calyptrae cucullate. Spores sphaerical, papillose to granulate.
